Growing Out Bitten Nails: A Week-by-Week Timeline for Your First 12 Weeks

Quick answer: Fingernails grow about 3mm a month, so growing out bitten nails takes around three to six months. With BIAB protecting them, most people see a visible free edge within 4 to 6 weeks, a noticeably longer nail bed by 8 to 12 weeks, and nails they are happy to show off by week 12. Slips are normal and do not reset your progress to zero.

TL;DR

  • Nails grow about 3mm a month, so patience is part of the plan.

  • Weeks 1 to 4: protection and noticing your habit.

  • Weeks 5 to 8: a visible free edge and the awkward stage.

  • Weeks 9 to 12: a longer nail bed and real confidence.

  • A slip is a pause, not a restart.

Her 4th appointment

“How long until they look normal?” Every nail biter asks me this at their first appointment. So here is an honest, week-by-week answer.

Helping clients heal from nail biting is one of the most rewarding parts of my work at Apricot Nails in Hawthorn. Every hand is different, but the journey follows a surprisingly consistent pattern.

Weeks 1 to 2: Protection First

Your first BIAB set is applied close to flush on very short nails. The goal is not length. It is a smooth, firm barrier your teeth cannot grip. Many clients say the biggest change in week one is simply noticing when they reach for their nails.

Weeks 3 to 4: Your First Infill

Around 2 to 3mm of new nail has grown. At your first infill, I rebuild the structure over that new growth. Damaged skin around the nails often looks calmer by now, especially with daily cuticle oil.

4 months of growth

Weeks 5 to 8: The Awkward Stage

This is when a small free edge appears, and when nails can look uneven because each one was bitten differently. It is also when urges can spike. It is completely normal, and it passes.

If you slip: tell me at your next appointment. There is no lecture. A bitten nail gets repaired, and your other nine nails keep all the progress they have made.

Weeks 9 to 12: The Nail Bed Lengthens

With the tip protected, the skin under the nail (the hyponychium) can gradually reattach further forward, so the pink nail bed looks longer. This is the change most people notice in photos. By week 12, most clients have nails they are proud of.

Your 12-Week Snapshot

  • 1 to 2: What you will notice: Smooth, protected nails; Your focus: Notice your triggers

  • 3 to 4: What you will notice: Calmer skin, first new growth; Your focus: First infill, daily oil

  • 5 to 8: What you will notice: Small free edge, uneven lengths; Your focus: Do not pick, keep booking

  • 9 to 12: What you will notice: Longer nail bed, even shape; Your focus: Enjoy them

What Helps Most Between Appointments

  • Cuticle oil every day so there is no dry skin to pick

  • Keep a small file with you instead of biting a snag

  • Notice patterns: screens, stress, boredom and driving are common

  • Book infills every 3 weeks at first to stay protected

When to Get Extra Support

For some people, biting is tied to stress or anxiety and feels hard to control. If biting is causing bleeding, infection or distress, a GP or psychologist can help alongside your nail care. There is no shame in that at all.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take for bitten nails to grow out?

Fingernails grow about 3mm a month, so fully growing out bitten nails usually takes three to six months. With BIAB protection, most people see a visible free edge within 4 to 6 weeks.

Will my nail beds grow back after biting?

Often, yes. When the tip is protected and not bitten, the skin under the nail can reattach further forward over a few months, making the nail bed look longer.

What if I bite my nails during the process?

It happens. The bitten nail is repaired at your next appointment and the rest keep their progress. It is a pause, not a restart.

Is BIAB good for nail biters?

Yes. BIAB creates a smooth, firm surface that is hard to bite, protects nails as they grow, and works on very short nails.
